Red Velvet Cake

... I will NEVER be a cake decorator, but boy, was it fun puttering over this one! ...

I have had a hankering for a red velvet cake for the last few days, so today was the day for puttering over this project. I found a wonderful recipe at Woodland Bakery's blog. The blog is neat because the recipes are shared and there are also links to You Tube tutorials on all sorts of things. I watched the one on the owner decorating this cake. She did a far better job. That's all I'm saying.

This is a super rich cake. The batter is a egg, canola oil, and buttermilk batter. It's very easy to mix up and preps in just a few minutes. The time is taken up in making the buttercream and cream cheese frostings. Yes! This cake has an inner layer of cream cheese frosting and the outer layer of buttercream for the decorating . A very special cake ...

It is Sprout Eric's birthday tomorrow, so this will be his birthday cake ... we'll do a time machine fast forward tomorrow and post a picture of the sliced cake because it is a beauty.

... Even the cake plate screams, Red Velvet !!!!! ...

... to get the red velvet crumbs, you slice the bottom layer rounded top off and pulverize ...

... flip the bottom layer to accept the cream cheese frosting layer and top with a perfect upper layer ...

... frost the outer cake with buttercream frosting, use a cake comb to make the stripes ...
... I used a serrated knife - yeah, I know so unprofessional ...

... sprinkle the top with red velvet crumbs ...

... pipe and 'poof' little stars all the way around and over the crumb topping ...

... stand back to admire ...

... cover to keep the kitty from lapping at the buttercream ...
